Canal Belt and Jordaan

By 8 May 2019 September 5th, 2023 No Comments

As soon as you cross the Singel, the city quiets down, and the famous canal district opens up to you like a folding hand fan. This area is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and for good reason; it is impressive on all fronts. Meter-high decorated canal houses look down on you, and the stories are there for the taking.

Opposite the canal district lies the Jordaan. In the 17th century, this area was a maze of unpaved alleys, smelly canals, and tiny houses built around small courtyards (hofjes). Once created for the city’s workers and underprivileged – hidden from view – now one of Amsterdam’s most picturesque and trendy places.

On this walk, you can stop for a drink on a terrace or add a visit to a small museum such as the Houseboat Museum or the Museum of the Canals.

THIS TOUR INCLUDES:
  • An expert private guide
  • Prinsengracht: majestic canal houses, boutiques, houseboats, the Western Tower, and the Anne Frank Museum
  • Jordaan: canals and former working-class houses, little shops, food stalls, and restaurants
  • Picturesque ‘hofjes’ (inner courts)
  • A visit to a vibrant local market (only on Mondays and Saturdays)
