City Highlights

Nijmegen is one of three cities that claims the title ‘oldest city of the Netherlands’. That says a lot. In 2005, the 2000-year anniversary of the city was celebrated, but traces of habitation go further back than that. When the Romans settled here, Nijmegen grew into the largest city of the low countries. A few centuries later, Emperor Charlemagne built a palace here. Nijmegen became one of the most important cities in his empire. Due to its strategic location, it was also often the focal point of struggle. Stroll through this grand lady of cities and experience what makes Nijmegen so special.
