Chambers and Courtyards

By 13 May 2019 September 5th, 2023 No Comments

In the past, the poor and needy depended on charity from the church and the city’s wealthy residents. To help these unfortunate fellow citizens – and to prevent them from revolting – the rich built rent-free alms-houses or ‘chambers’. Most of these chambers were built around a small courtyard. The inner city of Utrecht still harbours many of these inner courts, former monastery gardens, and authentic god chambers. On this two-hour chambers and courtyards walk you’ll learn all about these picturesque and secluded parts of the city.
