Utrecht is still far from touristy which offers all kinds of opportunities. Furthermore, a walk through the centre of Utrecht is a journey through history. The city was once the political, economic, religious, and cultural hub of the low countries. It’s the place where the Romans founded a fortress as part of the Limes Germanicus and the only Dutch pope in history built a palace. Many houses in Utrecht are of medieval origin and it is one of the first cities in the Netherlands to have city rights. It is the city where peace treaties were signed but also the place where witch hunts and sodomy trials took place.

Modern-day Utrecht is one of the four major cities in the Netherlands. With 172 different nationalities, it is a multicultural municipality. It’s also one of the greenest. The parks and low-lying yards along the water of the Oudegracht and Nieuwegracht are picturesque and popular hangouts. With over 1000 bars, clubs, and restaurants, Utrecht can rightly be called a vibrant place.
